Example:
"Well I hate to argue with a Russian genius, but Tolstoy didn't know Indians. And he didn't know that all Indian families are unhappy for the same exact reason: the fricking booze" (Alexi, p. 200)
--I read ahead....
"With a suspected genetic predisposition toward alcoholism, their addictions were passed on like heirlooms" (Walter, p. 1)
This quote shows similarities between Arnold in the book and the Spokane Indian Tribe news article. Both talk about American Indians' struggles with alcohol, even to the point where it is like a common trait every family has or that is passed down from one family member to another.
“Born a hydrocephalic, which means water on the brain……such as seizures, throughout his childhood” (Freelibrary.org).
ReplyDelete“I was born with water on the brain”, “I had a stutter and a lisp”, “First of all, I had seizures. At least two a week” (Alexie 1-3).
These two are highly similar. My thoughts are that Sherman Alexie, for the most part, based this book on himself. Both Sherman and Junior were born with too much water in their heads, had physical problems (eye problems, mouth problems, etc.), as well as childhood seizures.
“I was born with water on the brain which means I was born with too much cerebral spinal fluid in my brain.”(Alexi pg. 1)
ReplyDelete“Born hydrocephalic which means water on the brain.”(Freelibrary.org)
This quote is between Arnold the main character of the book and Sherman Alexi the writer of the book and it talks about how they were both born with water on the brain I also notice that the book and the articles are very much alike to almost the point of it being a true story.
My mother and father are drunks too, but they aren’t mean like that (Alexi pg. 17).
ReplyDeleteBattered for 100 years as an underclass in Spokane city, American Indians are struggling to free themselves of alcoholism and poverty (Walter pg 1).
Junior’s parents and many other Native Americans have drinking problems and are in poverty.
“It seems like every category we looked at, Indians were on the bottom,” (Walter, pg. 1)
ReplyDelete“I wish I were magical, but I am really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane Indian reservation.” (Alexie, pg. 8)
These quotes are similar because there family is really broke and don’t have a job and they are practically living on nothing. Both of their family abuse alcohol. Both of these guys feel like they’re not loved or they belong with nobody.
“So I draw because I feel like it might be my only real chance to escape the reservation” (Alexie pg 6).
ReplyDelete“Encouraged by poetry teach Alex Kuo, Alexie excelled at writing and realized he’d found his new path” (freelibrary.org).
These quotes are similar because Junior wanted to be a famous artist or writer and Sherman Alexie also wanted to be a writer when he was young and is now very popular in the world of literature. The quote from the book and the article make me think this was an actual story about him.
