Reading Assignment #6

Choose an allusion from the book to focus on.  Include the following in your comment on this post:

1)  Your definition of allusion
2)  The section from the book that includes the allusion (shorten using … if the passage is more than four lines of text)
3)  The allusion bolded in your quote
4)  Two facts about the person, event, book, artist, etc. that the allusion refers to (you will have to look these up) and that also relate to what is happening in the book.

Example: Pablo Picasso’s art is said to have been crafted with “a sense of vigor, and his own distinct style” no matter what was popular with other artists.

5)  Your explanation of why it makes sense that the author would allude to this reference, based on what is going on in the book.
6)   A correctly formatted MLA citation for the source(s) you used to find your facts on the allusion

  1. 1. Allusion is when authors reference well known books, people, or buildings.
    2. “Vince Lombardi used to say something I like,” he said. “its not whether you win or lose,” I said. “Its how you play the game” (Alexie pg. 148)
    3. Lombardi led the Green Bay Packer to three NFL championships and led them to win Super Bowl 1 and 2. He led the Redskins to its first winning season in fourteen years.
    4. These facts relate to the book because he was a great coach like Arnold’s and he had many inspirational quotes that encourage Arnold and his coach.

  2. 1. An allusion is a reference to a well-known person place, or thing.
    2. & 3. “So I looked up the word ‘grief’ in the dictionary. I wanted to find out everything I could about grief…….... It was Euripides, this Greek writer from the fifth century BC…….. Medea says, ‘What greater grief than the loss of one’s own native land?’” (Alexie 172-173).
“When Medea's husband, Jason, casts her aside for another woman, it's the last straw. Medea responds with violence, even going so far as to kill her own sons” (Shmoop Editorial Team).
    4. & 5. Junior alludes to Euripides, because this Greek play writer came up with the character of Medea. In the story, Medea marries a famous hero, Jason of the Argonauts, and has children with him. But Jason abandons her form another woman. The grief that she experienced drove her to terrible anger at the one who caused her pain, Jason. In vengeance, she killed the children that she had had with him. This makes perfect sense as to why the author alludes to this play. Junior and Medea both lost someone (Grandmother Spirit and Jason), and both wanted revenge. They wanted to tear the world apart, to kill everything and everyone. The only difference is that Medea did kill people, while Junior did not.

  3. My definition of an allusion is something that is almost imaginary kind of and something that you are imagining. “Vince Lombardi used to say something that I like,” he said. “Its whether you win or lose,” I said. “It’s how you play the game.” (pg. 148). Vince Lombardi was a football player, coach, and executive. He also coached the Green Bay Packers in the 1960’s and was born on June 11, 1913. The quote I just said is something he had said to his players and encourages them with. I think this was the perfect allusion to use in this book because they lost and Arnold said this to the coach.
