"I was suddenly ashamed of my anger, my rage, and my pain" (Alexie 196).
ReplyDeleteDo you think that Junior should feel this way, after beating the Wellpinit's basketball team?
I don't think Junior should feel this way because it's not his fault that some of the kids have drunken parents or didn't eat that morning. And although he totally dominated Rowdy, he was just on the other team and I don't think Junior needs to give up his goals and happiness for Rowdy's.
DeleteI agree with Miss Linville. It is bittersweet. As it says, he thought that they were Goliath and Rearden was David, but then he realized that it was the other way around.
DeleteI do not agree with you Devin. It may not be his fault, but it is his problem. he faces it every day. He empathizes, and sympathizes with them
DeleteI agree with greg because all the kids that live in the rez live depressed lives and losing a basketball game makes them feel bad and it adds on their depression.
DeleteI dont agree with devin, just like all the other kids on the rez, junior is poor and has to live with a drunk father.
DeleteIt is kind of a confusing situation. On the one hand, they crushed him after he had a terrible experience playing at the Wellpinnit gym. On the other hand, that's like pretty much all the rez team has (being good at basketball) and Reardan took that from them, which is a sad thing to realize. Very bittersweet...
ReplyDelete"They needed me to be good. They expected me to be good. And so i became good" (Alexie pg180).
ReplyDeleteDo you think other people wanting you to become good can actually have an affect and make you good?
Anything can influence you, if you let it. The amount of people, pressure, and the type of reinforcement they use to do it can affect how much it causes you to change. it is human nature to try and fit in, that is why we work so hard at it. They want him to be good, so he is willing to get better, in order to fit in.
DeleteI agree because although sports, for example, require a lot of physical fitness and strength, your mental ability is a huge part of it and if you have confidence and the ambition, you can do anything.
DeleteI do think this influence has an effect on Junior. He is more successful at Reardan in general just because people believe he is more successful. One time I was about to start this triathlon, just doing it kind of casually for fun, and this lady who had seen me swimming was like "Wow, I bet you are going to be one of the first women out of the water, because you are a great swimmer." Then I thought to myself "Yeah...I am a good swimmer. I should swim fast." I was the third woman out of the water; her wanting me to be good definitely worked. Otherwise I would have just leisurely dog paddled.....
DeleteConfidence, ambition and will are the three thiings that you should always have. If you are not confident, you will not have the will to do anything, which means you will not have ambition.
DeleteIt’s helpful to be in great physical condition but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have the support of others. It also helps to have a love for the sport but I greatly agree that the way others feel and make you feel is a big part of the game.
DeleteThat's cool Mrs. Linville, I will try and put this to use and help others get better and give them the confidence that they are good.
Deleteif people tell you you are good, you will think you are good. so you build up confidence and you will actually be good.
DeleteThis could really help even with us here at Meadows Valley we need as much support from the fans as we can get. The last time i won a basketball game was in the fifth grade and I think it has just become a well known thing to our teamates and fans that we just lost complete hope and that maybe if we get some more encouragment we could perform to our full potential.
ReplyDeleteI agree with devin. all sports need physical strength and the ability to think fast and know how to react, and that your mental abilities is a huge part of having confidence and believing in your self.
